NOBEL PEACE prize winning EU leaders were branded “colonial overlords” by democracy campaigners despite being lavished with the coveted award today.
On being awarded the “honour” the EU was described by Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland as a force for “promoting peace, democracy and human rights over six decades.”
The award is being seen as a morale boost for the bloc as it struggles to resolve its own deep economic crisis.
However the NO2EU campaign in Britain branded the decision the “sickest” of jokes when people across the economic block are suffering the worst austerity in a generation.
The democracy campaigners also pointed out that past winners of the prize had included US secretary of state Henry Kissinger won it in 1973 while overseeing a CIA backed fascist coup in Chile and authorising the secret bombing of Laos.
No2EU chairman Bob Crow said that to award the peace prize to an organisation behaving like “colonial overlords” in Greece, Spain and Portugal and elsewhere was ludicrous and deeply cynical.
